Jonathan is a big tortoise from Seychelles. He is very old, and Guinness World Records says he is the oldest land animal. He is also the oldest turtle or tortoise ever. This year, he will be 190 years old, but we don't know the exact day he was born.

Jonathan was born around 1832 and has lived on an island called St. Helena in the South Atlantic Ocean. He came from Seychelles in 1882 when he was already a big tortoise.

A picture from 1882 to 1886 shows Jonathan in the garden of Plantation House on St. Helena. He still lives there today. Jonathan has seen many governors, two world wars, 40 US presidents, and seven British kings and queens.

His life is simple. He likes eating, sleeping, and mating. He lives with three other big tortoises, but he is the famous one on the island. You can even see his picture on some coins, and soon there will be stamps with him.
